About Region 4 of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia

What is Region 4 of the Diocese of Virginia?

The Diocese of Virginia is composed of more than 81,000 baptized members and almost 400 clergy in 189 or so (and growing!) Episcopal congregations in the Commonwealth of Virginia in an area defined on the north by the Potomac River, on the south by the James River (which flows through the City of Richmond), on the east by the Chesapeake Bay, and on the west by the West Virginia border.

Both in terms of number of communicants and geographic size, the Diocese of Virginia ranks second of all Episcopal dioceses.

The Diocese of Virginia is divided into 15 geographical regions, each of which has a Dean (a clergy person), a President (a layperson) and a Regional Council (the clergy and lay representatives from each parish in the Region).

Region 4 of the Diocese of Virginia includes the 8 Episcopal congregations in the City of Alexandria: Christ Church, Church of St. Clement, Church of the Resurrection, Emmanuel, Grace, Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill, Meade Memorial, and St. Paul’s.

What does Region 4 do?

Region IV coordinates outreach and other projects and events of common interest to the churches of the region that are larger than could normally be supported by the individual churches alone. The representatives of the churches meet monthly as the regional council to share information and discuss projects of interest to the whole region. The region’s outreach committee recommends projects for funding from region funds contributed by the churches (a voluntary assessment of $1.00 per active communicant).

What has Region 4 done recently?

Region 4 combined with Region 3 (Episcopal churches in Arlington County) for a large book sale to benefit the Latino Church Planting Fund and raised $3,600 for the fund. In October, Meade Memorial conducted a regional healing service. Currently, the council is reviewing a Habitat for Humanity project, the Arlandria Clinic, and a booster project for ALIVE! (Alexandrians Involved Ecumenically).
